Transforming our Rail Industry
The Modular Remote Isolation (MRI) system enables safe, fast, and secure isolation of electrified railway and tramway overhead. Traditionally, the isolation process is performed manually by rail workers operating switches inside the rail corridor or substation, and then confirming the status both visually and through voltage meter readouts. The MRI system revolutionises this process by relocating the rail worker and isolation operation into a control room or substation – eliminating the need for the worker to access the track or substation. While improving safety this change significantly reduces the overall time required for isolation.
Key functions of the MRI system include:
- Safe confirmation of every switch’s actual status (live / open / earth(rail))
- Confirmation of line voltage, current, and continuity
- Secure interlocking of every switch in a designated area
The MRI improves lockout security by operating remote mechanical locks over a secure network working in parallel to traditional techniques. In doing so it leverages the strong safety culture and experience already in place, along with safety interlocking. By employing sensor-based technology which supports a end to end Safety Integrity Level (SIL) rated system – operators have enhanced visibility of the whole section simultaneously, rather than at a single point if they were working trackside.
The MRI system features a modular design that is specifically designed for interoperability with current switches and isolators in the market from any manufacturer. Fitting inside the space taken by manual switches, the MRI can have no impact on kinematic envelopes. Designed for multiple different communications protocols, the MRI is also designed to require minimal conduits and cabling – greatly simplifying installation.
